With the new-generation Mustang getting ready for its biggest debut yet, rumors have been swirling around regarding a few changes to the Mustang lineup. One huge change is believed to be the triumphant return of the legendary moniker -- the Mach 1.
Thanks to MustangsDaily, Ford sources indicate that the Mach 1 could make a comeback as early as 2017. With the last Mach 1 ending production a decade ago, it only makes sense to bring back one of the most popular Mustang models of all time.
The last Mach 1 was built on the New Edge platform and was a step up from your base model Mustang GT. With a functional shaker hood and a 32-valve aluminum block 4.6-liter V-8 stuffed under the hood, it was capable of throwing down 305 horses! But that’s not all, the New Edge Mach 1 featured 13-inch Brembo brakes, Tokico shocks and stiffer springs among other goodies.
Some more changes include the drop of the Shelby GT500 from the lineup with plans to replace it with the SVT Cobra, but don’t expect the Shelby name to be dropped completely just yet. There are plans to bring back the Shelby GT350 for 2016 as an official Ford factory model similar to the Shelby GT500, not a post-title package installed by Shelby.
The new Mustang isn’t turning to the past for their ideas anymore, so don’t expect the new Mach 1 to be anything like it was before. With everything changing and the Mustang making the leap over the pond, we can expect a horse of a different color.
