The 2010 season opener for the Keystone NMRA drag racing series was held this past weekend (March 4-7) at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Bradenton, Florida. Records were broken, 102 True Street competitors showed up, and Saturday brought one of the largest crowds ever to an NMRA event.
The Pro 5.0/Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Spring Break Shootout is the most anticipated NMRA event of the year. After a short winter break, the racers, spectators, and vendors converged on The Sunshine State once again.
Though the event officially began Thursday, the real festivities didn't get kicked off until Friday night. A crowd of racers and locals alike gathered at the local Hooters for the usual shenanigans. Justin Starkey of VMP Tuning was there with his mobile DynoJet for hire, and it wasn't long after dark before an unprompted burnout contest ensued. Surprisingly, no cops showed up to ruin the fun.
Saturday brought a full day of heads-up racing, broken records, a new True Street King, and the spectator lot bursting at the seams. Mike Murillo fell out of the competition and headed back to Texas, as did the SAM Racing team.
Sunday brought a number of surprises as five-time Super Street Outlaw champion John Urist lost in Round 1 after a drivetrain failure at about the 1/8th. A couple of crashes slowed down progress, but no injuries were reported.
