In a previous blog, I told you about Jim Cunningham and his quest to make a Ford competitive in NHRA Pro Stock. It is a class dominated by Mopar and GM, thanks in large part to the factory backing and development. Cunningham is one of the most determined racers and he approached Ford about doing more. They told him they would support Pro Stock as long as it didn't cost the company little-to-no money, that is based on rumors. The rumor mill also stated that Cunningham is paying for development of engine parts and also wind tunnel time to further enhance his Pro Stock program.
Fast-forward a few months, GM's involvement is shrinking and Mopar is pulling back some money as well. That definitely opens the door for Ford to make a move as the GM and Mopar contingents are stagnant. Cunningham had his Pro Stocker on display at the PRI Show with a sleek new front-end, making it a 2010 Mustang. He also announced that a second car is being built and if the budget allows it, the car will be run at NHRA events. He has tapped Erica Enders to pilot the second 2010 Mustang GT.
I hope Cunningham accomplishes his task because I am getting tired of watching the same dull cars run down the track. The advancement in the aero package will also filter down to the IHRA Pro Stock, Top Sportsman, and NMCA Pro Street ranks, making it easier and better for Ford racers in other classes to raise the level of their game.
