This past weeekend, Bradenton Motorsports Park held its annual Snowbird Outlaw Nationals. It has morphed into the unofficial season finale for the burgeoning outlaw street legal racing scene. The Bradenton officials run an assortment of classes from Top Dragster to Outlaw 10.5 and Outlaw Drag Radial. The biggest story out of the event was not who won which class, but rather an outstanding performance turned in by Kevin Fiscus and his twin turbocharged Mustang.
For the past several months, there has been a continual bashing of the Outlaw Drag Radial record. It started with Alex Vrettos and his twin turbocharged '94 Cobra that ran 7.37. He then lowered the record to a 7.35. Aftermarket suspension manufacturer and guru, David Wolfe, set the world on fire with Ken Nelson's '93 Mustang LX and reset the bar at 7.21. One month later, David Hinzman, would come in with his Chevy-powered Mustang and take the record down to a 7.18. He did the deed with a ProCharger-blown 540ci engine combination.
Now, just three months after the Outlaw Drag Radial record runs started coming in nearly weekly, it has settled at a jaw-dropping 7.06. The run was turned in by Kevin Fiscus of Florida. He used a Pro Line 454ci small block engine with CFE heads and a pair of Precision 88mm turbochargers. It is the same engine that Pro Line prescribes to its Outlaw 10.5 racers. In fact, a similar combo was used by Conrad Scarry to win the NMRA Pro Outlaw 10.5 championship and run 6.70s.
Fiscus has his sites set on the 6s, as do many others including David Wolfe, Dave Hinzman, Dwayne Gutridge, Alex Vrettos, and David Hance. Some might recognize Hance's name from the Pro Mod and Outlaw 10.5 ranks, as well as being the mastermind behind the Shakedown at Englishtown. He has been gathering a group of companies to post big money for the first 6-second Drag Radial run.
