How low can you go with a stock block?
The 5.0 crowd are saddled with extremely weak stock blocks. We have seen the two-bolt blocks snap at around the 500-550 range. If there is more power than that, the block is on borrowed time and runs the risk of actually splitting down the middle. On a recent trip to Radical Racing, a longtime Mustang performance shop, which is celebrating 15 years in business, owner and former Pro 5.0 racer Craig Radovich showed us a timeslip of perhaps the quickest and fastest stock 5.0 block-equipped Mustang. The feat was done in 1997 during the Stormin Norman Invitational at Maple Grove Raceway. I remember the car well, it was a square-eye coupe with a ProCharger supercharger. We are not talking about a F3R but rather an oil-fed D-series model from back in the day. Craig blistered a 9.38 at 144 mph. If you know of anyone who has run quicker than that, please let us know! And for the record, Craig did eventually split the block down the middle after enough quarter mile runs.
