Are aftermarket four-links and ladder bar suspensions obsolete on Fox-body Mustangs?

It seems there are super-fast Mustangs popping up all over the place lately and a lot of them are running on stock suspension. Last week, I blogged about David Wolfe who ran the quickest and fastest 1/8-mile pass not just on drag radials but also for stock suspension-equipped Mustangs. Are the days of ladder bar and four-link suspensions over for small tire racing? One would think so, well for true 10.5 and radial racing anyway.

While working this afternoon at MM&FF Command Central in New Jersey, I received a text message from a buddy in Oklahoma. I met Mike Genovese at the World Street Challenge earlier this year and I shot his car for an upcoming feature in the magazine. He sent me a text to let me know about his new best time, a 7.50-flat at 190 mph with a 4.89 1/8-mile time. That was done at 3,300 pounds, stock suspension, and on 28x10.5-inch slicks—sanes wheelie bars! Mike Duffy (Mike Duffy Race Cars) said that the car should go 7.40s easily next time out. The problem now is that the car is only certified for 7.50 runs.

It looks like Mike will be dropping the car off at MDRC for a 25.2 upgrade soon. Mike has said he might hit a few NMRA Super Street Outlaw races in 2009. He relies on a 400ci engine with Brodix BF202 heads and a ProCharger F3R supercharger. The car is not an over-the-top million dollar build up either, but rather a simple yet effective combination that he has spent a considerable amount of time fine tuning. It is definitely a car that any serious racer can build and not have to take out three mortgages to do so.

Stock suspension cars are popping up all over the country and going mid 7s seems to be common place. Right now, the quickest and fastest stock suspension car on the 1/4-mile is Alex Vrettos with his 7.37 run. I have a feeling that number will be dropped by the end of this racing season, especially with the Shakedown at Englishtown coming up.
