Here are some of the hot new products we couldn’t fit in the magazine.
Every day, my mailbox and e-mail inbox is inundated with the latest and greatest parts and pieces for Fox-body, SN-95, New Edge, and S197 Mustangs. Throw in some race specific parts, as well as some other model particulars, and you can begin to grasp how difficult of a task it is each and every month to pick out the chosen few products that make it into the Horsepower column in MM&FF. I certainly don’t want to break out some old and outdated part and put it in the back of the magazine. I try to keep the few pages allocated for the Horsepower column specifically for the absolute must-haves that month.
The thing is, after a while, the old and unused press releases about the parts I don’t use end up going into the trash, simply because they are, well, close to 2-3 months old. Well no more! Starting today, look on the MM&FF website for the products that are relevant, yet unable to hit the pages of MM&FF. Consider it the tasty leftovers of that great macaroni and meatball dinner.
So, without further ado, here are a couple of items you might just want to check out.
Now if I could only con the layout staff to give me more pages for this column every month...

Why bother building it when you can buy it! These past few months saw a number of PR’s on crate motors, so leading off is Year One’s 400 hp 351 Windsor crate motor. Featuring a 2-bolt main block, the bottom end is filled with a cast crank and hypereutectic pistons. Complete with a hydraulic roller cam with .517 intake and .574 exhaust lift and 218/224-intake/exhaust duration, the top end features a pair of 2.20/1.60 valve aluminum heads and a dual plane intake manifold. Compression checks in at a pump gas friendly 10:1, and the engine comes complete with oil pan, timing cover, valve covers, balancer, and flexplate. Each engine is balanced, blueprinted, and dyno-tested, and comes with a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. Year One, Dept. MMFF, 1001 Cherry Drive, Suite 1, Braselton, GA 30517; 800/950-9503; www.yearone.com.
Bill Mitchell Hardcore Racing Products With an increasing number of performance enthusiasts and street rodders seeking to combine the benefits of large displacement engines with electronic fuel injection, Bill Mitchell’s Hardcore Custom Shop has a cost-effective solution in the form of a series of big-inch crate engines that merge the resources of World Products and Accel/DFI. Mitchell’s Custom Shop staff has taken a number of popular World Products Man O’War (small-block Ford) combinations and, in collaboration with Accel DFI engineers, developed complete engine packages using “Thruster” EFI systems. This enables customers to install engines in most any platform, while having complete control over the engine tune, torque converter, A/C clutch, cooling system, and knock sensor. Each combination has been extensively dyno-tested. Bill Mitchell Hardcore Racing Products, Dept. MMFF, 51 Trade Zone Court, Ronkonkoma, NY 11779; 631/737-0372; www.theengineshop.com.
World Products World not only has a killer set of crate engines, but one heck of a nice intake manifold they have just developed. Let’s start with the crate engines, specifically their Man O’War all-aluminum engines with displacements of 349, 371, 427, and 460 cubic-inches. Based on the Man O’War block, the balanced rotating assembly showcases a 4340-forged steel crank, 4340 forged steel H-beam rods, and your choice of Mahle or Manley forged aluminum pistons. Depending on the engine size ordered depends on the proper cylinder head and deck height choice. All engines are dyno-tested, performance-certified, and backed with a 2-year warranty. If you already have the long-block built and assembled, then topping it off with World’s 302/351 High-Flow intake manifold would be a great choice. Designed for use with World’s own Man O’War 18-degree cylinder heads, or any aftermarket head for that matter, the manifold is available in both 4150 and 4500 styles, and features built-in bosses for use with nitrous oxide or electronic fuel injection. World Products, Dept. MMFF, 51 Trade Zone Court, Ronkonkoma, NY 11779; 631/981-1918; www.worldcastings.com.
SCT With their XCalibrator2 tuner being so popular, it was to be expected that SCT would step the program up and develop an advanced handheld tuning device for both gas and diesel applications with the X3 Power Flash and the SF3 Power Flash. Both tuners offer more power, data, features, and adjustments, as well as improved fuel economy. Designed to replace the popular XCalibrator2 tuner, the SF3 Power Flash is a pre-programmed and custom tunable PCM flash tuner that arrives pre-loaded with up to three dyno-proven custom performance tunes and one fuel economy tune. The X3 Power Flash is a dedicated custom tuning device, and is only available through SCT’s 500+ dealers around the world. SCT, Dept. MMFF, 134 Baywood Avenue, Longwood, FL 32750; 407/774-2447; www.sctflash.com.
Avaid Convert your 4.6- and 5.4-liter modular engine over to a dry sump system with Avaid’s new dry sump oil systems for said engines. Designed to improve power through superior scavenging, the dry sump system’s improved flow and pressure eliminates starvation issues under severe acceleration, cornering, and braking. The heart of the system is a 3-, 4-, or 5-stage dry sump pump with the number of scavenge and pressure sections dependant on the requirements of the application. It comes with an internal pressure regulator, and it mounts to the passenger side of the block. The pump is driven via a custom 3-bolt drive offered for use in either 6- or 8-rib configurations, and the kit comes with everything needed for installation. Avaid Oil Systems, Dept. MMFF, 10041 Canoga Avenue, Chatsworth, CA 91311; 818/998-8991; www.avaid.com.
Jegs High Performance Jegs High Performance and Carroll Shelby Wheels have teamed up to create some killer looking wheels for ’05 and up Mustangs. Inspired by the Shelby Mustangs of the ‘60s and ‘70s, the wheels are manufactured to the most stringent standards using the latest casting technology, CNC machining, and finishing techniques. Jegs High Performance, Dept. MMFF, 101 Jegs Place, Delaware, OH 43015; 800/345-4545; www.jegs.com.
Level 10 Transmissions Since way back in 1973, Pat Barrett and the Level 10 transmission crew have been building quality performance transmissions, and have now graduated to building up the new 5R55S automatic in the S197 Mustang for performance applications. Using the 5R55S as a starting point, Level 10 added Performance System Technology PTS clutches to stay locked even when hit with 1,000 horsepower. Extensive valve body modifications allow for smooth shifts on the street, but tire shredding results when the hammer is dropped. Throw in a high-pressure pump, and this trans is ready for anything you chuck at it. Level 10 Transmissions, Dept. MMFF, 3670 Route 94, Hamburg, NJ 07419; 973-827-1000; www.levelten.com.
