Fitting 31x10.5W tires under a Fox Mustang.
I was talking with Tony Akins of TCI a few weeks ago about my ’90 Mustang LX at the chassis shop. Right now, DMC Racing is working over my car into a 25.2-spec ride that will roll on stock suspension. As we were talking, Tony e-mailed pictures of a car he will be driving this year. Clint Wood’s coupe is down at Bridge Racing getting a 25.5 upgrade and is being fitted with a Pro Line 400ci engine with Yates heads and a gigantic 114mm turbocharger! As if that wasn’t crazy enough, Bridge Racing actually fit a set of 31x10.5W tires under the back of the car. They are utilizing a stock suspension system, despite the big meats. In fact, the car retains the entire rear frame rail setup, keeping it legal for Outlaw Drag Radial racing with just a tire swap.
I couldn’t believe that size tire fit underneath the car. I figured the full size tubs could handle the meats, but I didn’t know they would fit with the rest of the package. When I say package, I am referring to the rear frame rails, which are still intact albeit some major trimming, and the control arms. Apparently, the fabricators at Bridge Racing figured a way to run the big tires. With that size tire and the powerful engine combination, I think this car has a great shot at the stock suspension world record. I don’t know exactly what that time is, but I would guess David Wolfe set it when he ran 7.40 at WFC 9 in the Drag Radial class.
Has anyone run quicker? If so, post a comment and let us know who has.
