Shelby GT500KR tapped as the next KITT in the upcoming Knight Rider TV Series
Those of us who grew up in the 80s were most likely fans of the hit TV series Knight Rider. If you never heard of the show, a quick synopsis is that Michael Knight (played by David Hasselhauf) was hired by the Phoenix Foundation to be a crime fighter. He was equipped with a high-tech Gen III Trans Am, which had a super-computer that talked, interacted, and drove this James Bond-like vehicle. The car’s name was KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand) and designed by a dead billionaire. The purpose was to fight crime, and they did so, week-in and week-out.
Since the TV and movie industry has been on the kick of reviving old shows and movies (as if they ran out of original ideas), it was only a matter of time before they put KITT back on the road. The original producer had the vision of the series being the Lone Ranger, with a car. They are bringing it back for round two. This time the cheesy Trans Am has replaced with a real hot rod—a Shelby GT500KR. It will be black with matte black stripes and the legendary red LED lights will run back and forth in the car’s twin hood scoops.
While we are on the topic of Knight Rider, I was flipping through the channels late one night and stopped to watch Myth Busters on the Discovery Channel. They actually proved it is possible to do the Knight Rider stunt. Basically Knight Industries had a rolling garage in the form of an 18-wheeler. It transported the team from crime to crime. To save time, KITT would drive on to the ramps while the 18-wheeler cruised down the highway. The Myth Busters crew simulated that scene and proved it is possible to do it. I haven’t found any news about a re-launch date for Knight Rider Returns.
